The Class 24/Class 25 series of locomotives under the Type 2 designation were fitted with Sulzer engines, giving them a distinct “gurgling” sound that afforded them the nickname “Whirlybirds” or more commonly “Rats” (presumably because there were loads of them scattered about all over the system!). This model, one of a small production batch made some time over the last ten years was found to be running in the North of Scotland, whereupon it was acquired for the LSMR collection. It is intended to convert this engine to operate via Radio Control as the others have been similarly converted.
