Whilst the A4 class were built purely for speed, Gresley's less famous but equally popular mixed traffic V2 class engines were remarkably similar in design. The same 3 cylinder conjugated gear arrangement, streamlined cab and rear Cartazzi truck gave the V2s the ability to hold their own on heavy express trains alongside the fast fitted goods trains which constituted their bread and butter. This well proportion but robustly made model is particularly strong, given the 3 cylinders and additional adhesive weight given by the steel boiler. The builder of this engine had built 2 other large 7 1/4” gauge models, an LMS Jubilee and an LNER U1 Garratt.
